Arriving at the Gig
Get To
Know the AV Person
If there’s a person in charge of
the equipment, such as the sound and the lighting, make
sure to find out who that person is, and introduce
yourself. Generally, the person who does the sound, the
lighting and the projection is one of the least
recognized people on the team. I know, because I’ve been
that person myself.
When you find out who the AV
person is, and you acknowledge them, get to know them a
little, and offer your appreciation for their work. They
tend to value that and will likely remember you, because
not many people extend them this courtesy.
This may not garner you any
special privileges or a better sound, but the AV person
may be a little more aware when it’s your turn to speak,
and may be a little more attentive, simply because you
got to know them a bit and they want you to succeed up
on the stage in front of an audience.
In addition, if you do need a
little extra help, such as a specific lighting effect or
a louder monitor, they’re more likely to help you out if
you’ve been sincerely appreciative of their work.
It’s a minor point that could
make a difference to your overall experience.
So, what’s the lesson? A little
sincere appreciation for the AV person could enhance
your experience as a speaker. |
